The Boy Who Invented TV: the story of Philo Farnsworth by Kathleen Krull, illustrated by Greg Couch (picture book biography)
(May 2010)
In the early 1900s, we already had the word television. However, no one knew quite what a television was because no one had figured out how a TV would actually work. Whirling disks and mirrors just didn't cut it. In an amazing breakthrough, questioning and deep thinking led the teenage Farnsworth to interpret the parallel lines of a plowed potato field as the solution for how to transmit images via electrical current. Kathleen Krull deftly shows how Farnsworths lifelong habit of scientific experimentation and quest for knowledge led to a breakthrough that had much more experienced scientists and inventors completely stumped.
